The Effect of Binarity on Stellar Rotation - beyond the Reach of Tides

چکیده
We present a comparison between the rotation period distributions of solartype single stars and primary stars in close binaries (0.1 AU . a . 5 AU) in the young (∼ 150 Myr) open cluster M35 (NGC2168). We find that the primary stars in the close binaries rotate faster than the single stars, on average. The differences in the means and medians between the period distributions are statistically significant at the 99.9% level or higher. The faster rotation among the primary stars in close binaries is not due to tidal synchronization as tidally evolved stars are excluded from the comparison. We discuss this result in the context of different early-evolution accretion processes and star-disk interactions for single stars and stars in close binaries. Properties of six short-period massive binaries: A study of the effects of binarity on surface chemical abundances
Context. A significant percentage of massive stars are found in multiple systems. The effect of binarity on stellar evolution is poorly constrained. In particular, the role of tides and mass transfer on surface chemical abundances is not constrained observationally. Aims. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of binarity on the stellar properties and surface abundances of massive b...
متن کاملEvaluation of New MOND Interpolating Function with Rotation Curves of Galaxies
The rotation curves of a sample of 46 low- and high-surface brightness galaxies are considered in the context of Milgrom's modi_ed dynamics (MOND) to test a new interpolating function proposed by Zhao et al. (2010) [1] and compare with the results of simple interpolating function. The predicted rotation curves are calculated from the total baryonic matter based on the B-band surface photometry,...

In this paper, the effect of titanium dioxide nanoparticles on the response of the freely suspended nano-fluid was investigated in an external electric field. Applying the external electric field to liquid film carrying electric current caused the layer rotation. It was due to the surface charge response of the layer to the electric field. The effect of surface charge on titanium dioxide nano-...
متن کاملConcerning thermal tides on hot Jupiters
By analogy with a mechanism proposed by Gold and Soter to explain the retrograde rotation of Venus, Arras and Socrates suggest that thermal tides may excite hot jovian exoplanets into nonsynchronous rotation, and perhaps also noncircular orbits. It is shown here that because of the absence of a solid surface above the convective core of a jovian planet, the coupling of the gravitational and the...
متن کاملTHE EFFECT OF COSMIONS ON THE STABILITY OF MAIN SEQUENCE STELLAR CORES
We have studied the effect of hypothetical Cosmions on the core stability of main sequence stars (of populations I and II). Cosmions, with a mass of 4-10 Gev/c2 and a scattering cross section with nucleons of approximately 10-36 cm2 could prevail in transporting heat in the stellar cores. Raby [17] showed the existence of a local thermal instability caused by the presence of Cosmions in the sol...
